Estimated ranges and comparisons

Understand a change without overreading a point estimate.

Updated Read as Markdown

The interface calls the uncertainty beside a figure an estimated range. The answer count appears alongside it when known. An unknown answer count stays absent.

Read a figure with its range#

An estimated range gives the figure’s precision. A point estimate alone does not describe how much evidence supports the reading.

What the comparison says#

Comparisons use five outcomes: Clear increase, Clear decrease, No clear change, Not enough data to compare, and Comparison unavailable because the measurement setup changed.

No clear change means the difference did not meet the decision rule. It does not claim that the true change is exactly zero. A changed measurement setup is a separate reason for refusing a comparison.

Clear change does not mean the product caused the change. A comparison describes the difference between readings; attribution needs its own evidence.
